Otoplasty, or ear surgery, involves the reshaping of the outer ear or pinna. People choose to get ear surgery in order to address a variety of cosmetic concerns such as ear pinning for ears that stick out, or otoplasty to correct aesthetic concerns related to an injury or congenital disorder.
Dr. Reo Pugao of Martin Plastic Surgery in Las Cruces, New Mexico is an experienced facial cosmetic surgeon, offering ear surgery and other similar procedures to men and women in Southern New Mexico and beyond.

Am I a Good Candidate?
You could be a good candidate for otoplasty if you are bothered by the appearance of protruding, misshapen or asymmetrical ears. Ideal candidates should be in good physical health, not smoke and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure. While both children and adults can be candidates for ear surgery, the ears must be fully developed before surgical intervention is an option.
Some people choose to combine ear surgery with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as rhinoplasty, cheek augmentation, chin augmentation or a facelift. Dr. Pugao will help you decide if ear surgery and/or other facial surgeries could be appropriate for your unique situation.
Otoplasty FAQs
How much does ear surgery cost?
The cost of ear surgery can vary, depending on factors like your natural anatomy, goals and location. The average cost of otoplasty is just over $3,000 according to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This figure does not include additional expenses such as anesthesia and operating room fees.
At Martin Plastic Surgery, financing and payment options are available to help make your procedure as affordable as possible.
Is otoplasty covered by insurance?
It depends. If otoplasty is performed to correct a functional problem, then your health insurance provider may cover all or part of the cost of ear surgery. Contact your insurance provider for more information about your coverage.

What is the best age to get otoplasty?
Otoplasty is commonly performed on children ages five and older, as the ears need to be fully developed prior to this procedure. However, many adults also opt for ear surgery to address cosmetic or functional issues. There is no “right” age to get ear surgery, and Dr. Pugao can help you decide if you could be a good candidate based on your unique goals, trouble areas and a physical examination.
Does ear surgery hurt?
Otoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel any pain during your procedure. Afterward, some mild discomfort, tenderness, swelling and bruising are to be expected. These symptoms are typically managed well with oral pain medication and should gradually subside as you continue to heal.
How long does ear surgery take?
Generally speaking, otoplasty takes around 1 to 2 hours to perform, depending on your specific goals. Ear surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, so you can expect to go home that same day. However, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first day after your procedure.
How long does it take to recover from ear surgery?
Most people are able to return to school or work around one week after otoplasty. You will be asked to keep your head elevated for this amount of time as well to help reduce swelling and minimize any discomfort. Physical activity can typically be resumed after two weeks.
When will I see my final otoplasty results?
You should be able to see nearly full results around 2 weeks after ear surgery, once swelling has diminished. However, small changes may still occur up to 12 months afterward.
