Liposuction, also just known as “lipo,” is a body contouring procedure that can help you slim and tone your body shape. Liposuction is a contouring procedure, not a substitute for or alternative to weight loss. It can be an excellent addition for people who eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise.

Procedure
Spotlight
Liposuction is a proven body contouring procedure that helps men and women treat “trouble spots” such as:
- Love Handles
- Lower Abdomen Fat
- Bulges on the Hips and Thighs
Good Candidates for Liposuction
The best candidates for liposuction are men and women who are at or close to their ideal body weight and size, yet still have persistent areas of unwanted fat accumulation. Liposuction cannot change underlying bony dimensions, but it can improve body contour significantly when subcutaneous fat is the problem.
What Can Liposuction Treat?
The most common areas that benefit from lipo are the abdomen, hips, and thighs. Liposuction may be combined with other procedures, such as a Tummy Tuck, to maximize your overall benefits.
Recovery & Results
After your liposuction procedure, you can expect to have bruising, redness and swelling in and around the treated area as well as mild discomfort. Prescribed medications can help ease the discomfort. Dr. Martin recommends wearing a compression garment to help reduce swelling and promote healing. Swelling could last for several weeks, but within a few days, you should be comfortable enough to return to work.
While you may be able to notice an improvement right after surgery, it can take several months before your final results are revealed. Due to the swelling and fluid retention, you may even appear slightly bloated. However, this is only temporary and should go down as your body continues to heal. Depending on how much fat is removed, you can expect to see final results between 1 to 3 months after the procedure.
Liposuction can provide long-lasting results, especially if you stay committed to following a healthy lifestyle. Weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells to grow and essentially undo your results. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen can help prolong your results.

Liposuction FAQs
How much does lipo cost?
Cost is one factor to consider if you’re thinking about liposuction, but it’s not the only one. You may see many doctors advertising liposuction and other body contouring methods. It pays to do your homework and look for an effective body shaping procedure performed by an experienced surgeon. We are happy to provide complete pricing information at your consultation, once we know more about the areas you want to treat. We also offer cosmetic surgery financing to make your procedure even more affordable.
Will liposuction hurt?
Before your procedure, medication such as local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia will be administered. This will minimize any pain and discomfort during the procedure. After the procedure, you may experience some pain and discomfort, but this is controlled by over-the-counter pain medications or prescription pain medications.
What can I expect during recovery from liposuction?
After your procedure, you will receive full post-op instructions from Dr. Martin on how to care for your surgical sites and possible drains, pain medication prescriptions and when your first follow-up appointment is. You may have a compression garment or bandages in place, as well as temporary drains in place to remove any excess blood or fluids.
You can expect to feel uncomfortable and see some bruising and swelling. Within the first week, this should start to improve, but you may be instructed to wear compression garments for up to 6 weeks after your procedure. However, within a few days, you should be feeling well enough to return to normal daily activities and work.
Are there any risks involved with liposuction?
Liposuction is a common and safe procedure, but as with any medically invasive procedure, there can be risks involved. Potential risks associated with liposuction include:
- Anesthesia complications
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Change in skin sensation around the treated area
- Nerve and blood vessel damage
- Fluid accumulation
- Infection
- Irregular contours or asymmetries
- Loose skin or worsening of cellulite
Will I see results right away?
Chances are you won’t see noticeable results immediately and swelling may actually make the area look larger than before the procedure. As the swelling goes down, you will begin to see your results.
