Breast augmentation is one of the most p opular cosmetic surgeries, allowing women to achieve a fuller, curvier look to their figure. Achieving natural-looking results during augmentation depends on many factors, all starting with the choice of your plastic surgeon.
Surgical Skill and Experience
The first and most important step in getting the best breast augmentation results is to choose a surgeon who has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Medical Specialties, which only certify those surgeons who:
- Graduated from an accredited medical school
- Completed six years of surgical training following medical school
- Completed a minimum of two years of serving in a plastic surgery residency program
- Passed comprehensive oral and written exams
- Participate in continuing medical education
Surgeons who are members of elite medical organizations and professional societies have a further commitment to the skill and craft involved in performing cosmetic plastic surgery. These groups, such as such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, have very strict, peer-evaluated standards for membership.
The official ASPS website allows you to search for a member surgeon in your area, giving you an easy way to verify credentials. If available, it’s always a good idea to also check out the surgeon’s website for more detailed information about his or her background, training, and personal philosophy, along with a look at before and after photos of real breast augmentation patients.
Your Guide to Breast Augmentation
Helping you choose the correct implant to meet your cosmetic goals is another way in which your plastic surgeon can ensure that you see the best breast augmentation results. Along with different types of implants (saline and silicone), there are also different sizes that you will need to choose from, plus decide on the right implant shape and profile. During your consultation, your surgeon will take measurements to determine which implants will work with your natural anatomy to give you a great look.
Since there are so many decisions involved before your actual breast augmentation, your plastic surgeon serves as a tour guide of sorts as you navigate unfamiliar territory. He or she should explain the difference between all the various breast implant options so you fully understand how all of the characteristics of a breast implant work together to give you the final result you hope for.
Do your research, ask the right questions and examine your surgeon’s portfolio to ensure that they deliver consistently beautiful results.
Surgical Skill Minimizes Complications
Before surgery, your doctor should go over the procedure with you, explaining what is expected before surgery, what will happen during surgery, and what to expect after surgery. If you have any medical concerns, such as a pre-existing condition that would necessitate an alternate to anesthesia or any post-surgery medications, your doctor will go over these as well.
During the surgery itself, technical skill can minimize many risks, including the risk of needing breast implant revision surgery later on due to implant malposition. Additionally, a knowledgeable surgeon who is well-versed in the latest breast augmentation research will practice the most up-to-date safety standards and surgical techniques for a safer surgery and recovery.
Finally, your surgeon shouldn’t just vanish once your breast augmentation is complete. Recovery is just as much a part of the breast enhancement process as the surgery itself, so it’s important to choose someone you trust to answer all your questions or concerns, whether they arise before, during or after your breast augmentation.
