You have made the decision to have liposuction, but now comes the hard part. Picking the plastic surgeon that will perform your lipo is probably the most important decision you will make.
While advances in liposuction make the procedure relatively safe, every medical procedure comes with risk. Choosing a surgeon with board certification and experience with liposuction is essential.
The Importance of Board Certification
On average, every plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery has at least 16 years of educati on that includes specific training in cosmetic surgery. However, those who receive board certification must also pass a written exam and a 2-day oral exam where they are evaluated for their general knowledge, safety protocols, and ethical standing. This additional testing demonstrates a higher level of expertise and qualifications.
The American Board of Plastic Surgery refers to board certification as “a warranty for the type of training your surgeon has received.”
Other Things to Consider When You Pick a Surgeon for Lipo
While finding a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best place to start, there are some other factors to consider when choosing a liposuction surgeon. These can include:
- Does the surgeon regularly perform lipo — While a board-certified plastic surgeon may have experience with lipo, they may not perform it very often. So, it important to look for a surgeon that has a strong history of performing liposuction procedures.
- Look at previous liposuction results — During your initial liposuction consultation, ask your plastic surgeon if you can see results from previous lipo patients that had the same procedure you are looking to get. While individual results vary, this can help give you a good idea of the results you can expect.
- Find a plastic surgeon you are comfortable with — It doesn’t matter how good a surgeon is, if you aren’t able to communicate your concerns and feel heard, chances are you will not have a good experience. Find someone who will take the time to answer your questions and address your concerns.
