Women often choose breast augmentation surgery to boost the volume and shape of their breasts, making it the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States. However, if you have been diagnosed with tuberous breasts, tuberous breast augmentation is a slightly different procedure that not only adds volume to the breasts but also helps correct the tissue restrictions that occur with this condition.
What Are Tuberous Breasts?
Tuberous breasts, also known as tubular breast syndrome, is a congenital condition that affects how the breasts develop during puberty. During development, an abnormally thick, strong connective tissue develops in the chest that restricts normal development, resulting in small breasts with an abnormal shape. This abnormal shape is often conical or tube-like with an oval or square base. While this condition does not cause any medical concerns, it can affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed.
While many women live with the smaller breast size associated with tuberous breasts, others opt for breast augmentation surgery to enhance the appearance of their breasts.
Tuberous Breast Augmentation Is Slightly Different
If you have been diagnosed with tuberous breasts and want a breast augmentation to enhance your breast appearance, you will want to find a plastic surgeon experienced with this procedure as it is slightly different than a standard breast augmentation. In some cases, you will require two different procedures.
During the first procedure, the surgeon must release the abnormal connective tissue and a tissue expander may be necessary. If this tissue expander is put in place, it is then slowly filled with saline over the course of a few weeks to months in order to make room for breast implants. Once complete, a second surgery is performed to remove the tissue expander and place the breast implants, giving you the breast volume and shape you are looking for.
If you have tuberous breasts and are looking to enhance your breast size, a tuberous breast augmentation may be right for you. Dr. Scot Martin is experienced with this procedure and can help you achieve the breast profile you desire.
