The tummy tuck is a popular cosmetic procedure for getting rid of stubborn belly fat and loose abdominal skin, especially following a pregnancy. However, the tummy tuck is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. There are actually three different types of tummy tucks, and each one has its advantages.
1. Full Tummy Tuck
The full tummy tuck involves an incision across the lower abdomen as well as an incision around the belly button. This version addresses the areas above and below the belly button and down to the bikini line and is the most commonly performed abdominoplasty. A full tummy tuck removes excess stomach skin and fat and repairs abdominal muscles.
2. Mini Tummy Tuck
As its name suggests, the mini tummy tuck is a minor version of the full tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck involves just one incision in the lower abdomen and addresses skin laxity below the belly button. The mini tummy tuck is recommended for people who only have a small amount of excess skin located below the navel and need some refinement. A mini tummy tuck will not correct diastasis recti.
3. Extended Abdominoplasty
Dramatic weight loss can result in excess skin around the entire midsection, including the hips. People who’ve lost a considerable amount of weight are often ideal candidates for the extended abdominoplasty. An extended tummy tuck can remove the loose skin and pockets of fat surrounding the mid-torso and repair abdominal muscles for an overall improvement in contours.
The three tummy tuck variations allow you to choose the one that is right for you. An experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon can explain your options and help you arrive at a treatment plan that will allow you to get the most out of your tummy tuck.
