If you are considering a tummy tuck, you likely have a bunch of questions when it comes to the procedure and the recovery process. Here we take a closer look at tummy tuck recovery and post-op care b y answering three of the most common questions we hear from patients.
When Will My Swelling Go Down?
Everyone heals differently, so there is no set timetable when it comes to recovery and swelling. However, in general, swelling begins to go down within the first two to three weeks but you may not see the swelling fully resolve until three months or longer, depending on how your body heals.
When Can I Resume Normal Activities?
In terms of plastic surgery recovery, a tummy tuck usually requires the most time. While everyone recovers at their own pace, you can expect discomfort, bruising, and swelling for at least the first 48 hours after your procedure.
In general, you will need to take at least two weeks off from work, though after the first week you should be able to perform some light daily activities. After about six weeks, you can gradually begin resuming more strenuous activity as long as you are signed off by your plastic surgeon and by eight weeks, you should be back to your pre-surgical activities.
What Happens If I Don’t Wear My Compression Garments?
Compression garments are designed to help support your stomach and aid in the recovery process. In general, they should be worn all day and night and only removed for showering or washing. Compression garments play a vital role in recovery and, if not worn as instructed, can increase the risk of suture rupture, seroma or hematoma formation, and increased bruising and swelling.
If your tummy tuck is scheduled and you still have questions about your recovery, it is important to speak with your surgeon. At Martin Plastic Surgery, Dr. Scot Martin is available to answer your recovery questions and will provide you with detailed post-op instructions designed to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.
